Joining the library

Who can join the library?
Everybody is welcome to join.
 
How much does it cost to join?
There is no charge for joining the library
 
What do I need to bring to join the library?
Bring two forms of identification with you:
One with your signature: e.g your Drivers Licence, Community Services Card or Bankcard.
One with your current address: e.g a bank statement, telephone, rates or power account.
 
Where can I use my card?
You can use your card at Paraparaumu, Waikanae and Ōtaki libraries.
 
Where can I get an application form?
You can get an application form from Paraparaumu, Waikanae and Ōtaki libraries or download an application form. 
 

Issuing items

 
How many items can I borrow from the library at once?
You can borrow up to 30 items.
 
How long can I keep items from the library?
Standard issue is for 3 weeks plus 3 weeks renewal
A Best Seller is issued for 2 weeks plus 2 weeks renewal (additional charges apply)
Videos / DVDs are issued for 1 week plus 1 week renewal (additional charges apply)
 
Can I take a reference book home overnight?
No reference books may not be removed from the library
 
 
Which items cost money to borrow from the library?
* 50% discount for community services supergold card holders
*Best seller Books - $4.00
*Best Seller Magazines - $2.00
*CDs – $2.00
*DVDs - $3.00
Interloans - $5.00 - $8.00
Talking Books - $3.00 (Free to those with physical impairments)
 
What methods of payment can I use at the library?
We have cash, Eftpos, and cheque options available.
 

Returning items

 
When are my books due back?
You can check by:
  • looking at the slip of paper you were given when your books were issued or
  • phone the libraries or
  • going to My Library on this website. (You will need a password to do this. Get one now or ask at the Information Desk at any of the libraries.)
 
Where can I return my books?
You can return your books to Paraparaumu, Waikanae or Ōtaki libraries – it does not matter which one they were issued from.
 

Renewals

 
Can I get my library books renewed?
Books can be renewed once for 3 weeks if no other reserves have been placed against them.
 
Magazines can be renewed for 1 week.
 
How do I renew my books?
  • Ask at the desk at any of the libraries or
  • phone the libraries or
  • from My Library on this website. (You will need a password to do this. Get one now or ask at the Information Desk at any of the libraries.) 
Can I renew a Bestseller?
Yes you can, but you need to come into the library to do this.
They can be renewed for 2 weeks for an additional $4.00.
 
Can I renew my interloan?
You may request a renewal while at the library or by phone. Your interloan will be renewed on your library record then the Interloans Librarian will request a renewal with the lending library. You will be contacted if the renewal is declined.
 

Overdues

 
How much do I have to pay if my books are late?
Adult books, CDs, Videos – 40c per day
Children’s books – 10c per day
Bestsellers, Rental DVDs  - $1.00 per day
 
I have received an overdue notice from the library, but I have returned / never had it. What do I do?
You will need to talk to someone at the issues desk either by coming into the library or by phoning us.
 
Do people under 16 years pay overdue fines on library items?
Yes, fines apply to all library members.The fees are:
Children’s books       10c per day
Adults books, CDs, Videos         40c per day
Bestsellers, Rental DVDs  - $1.00 per day
 

Damaged/lost items

 

What do I do if I damage something from the library?
You will need to speak to someone at the issues desk either by coming into the library or phoning us. You may be charged for replacement plus an administration fee.

You will need to speak to someone at the issues desk either by coming into the library or phoning us. You may be charged for replacement plus an administration fee.
 
I’ve paid for a lost book library book, but now I have found it. What should I do?
You will need to speak to someone at the issues desk either by coming into the library or phoning us. If you return it within 6 months you may request a refund of the cost of the item.
 
How do I get a replacement library card?
You need to go into one of our libraries, with current ID. There will be a $3.00 charge.
 
Can I take out book if my card is lost?
 We will issue books provided you present ID. You will need to arrange a new card though.
 
What do I do if my card is lost / stolen?
Please notify the library as soon as possible.
 
What happens if I return my own personal book?
You will need to speak to someone at the issues desk either by coming into the library or phoning us.
 
 
What happens if I lent my book to a friend, and they haven’t brought it back?
You are liable for any items taken out on your card.
 

Reserving items

 
Can I reserve an item that is not on the shelf?
Yes you can:
  • Ask at the desk at any of the libraries or
  • phone the libraries
  • from My Library on this website.( You will need a password to do this. Get one now or ask at the Information Desk at any of the libraries.)
 
How much does it cost to reserve a book?
It costs $2.00 per item. (* 50% discount for community services supergold card holders.)
Reserves of children’s items are free.
 
 
When can I pick up my reserved book?
When your book is available we will phone you or we can text you.  Please let us know next time you are in the library or by phone or email if you would like to be conntacted by text.
 
Where can I pick up my reserved book?
The book will be at the issues desk of the requested destination Paraparaumu, Waikanae, or Ōtaki libraries.
 
Can I reserve a best seller?
To keep these titles readily available for customers you cannot reserve Bestsellers. But the book will also be in the free lending collection, and you can reserve that copy.
 
What if I want an item that the library doesn’t have?
We can try to get it from you from another library (called an Interloan.) There will be a charge of $5 - $8.
 
 

Collections

 
How do I make a suggestion for the libraries’ collection?
You can fill in a Suggestion to Buy at the libraries or online.
 
Do you have Jigsaws to borrow.
Yes jigsaws are available to borrow. 
 
Does the library have a best seller collection?
Yes, all 3 of our libraries do. Best sellers are issued for 2 weeks and cost $4.00(* 50% discount for community services supergold card holders.)
 
Does the library have DVDs?
Yes, DVDs cost $3.00 each for 1 week (* 50% discount for community services supergold card holders.)
 
Can I borrow videos from the library?
Yes, videos are free for 1 week
 
How many children’s videos and DVDs can I borrow from the library at once?
You may borrow up to 30 items at any one time, but normal charges apply.
 

Other library services

 
Can I book display and notice board space in the library?
Yes, please ask at the Information Desk or phone the appropriate library.
 
Can I buy plastic book covers at the library?
No, the libraries do not sell book covers, but you can have your books covered for a $5.00 fee.
 
Is there a laminating service at the library?
Yes, $3.00 for an A4 page, and $4.00 for an A3 page
 
Can I fundraise at your library?
Unfortunately this activity is not permitted. You can promote fundraising activities, but cannot collect cash at the libraries.
 
Will the library mend my books?
This service is not provided by the library.
 
Does the library have book sales?
Yes we do, they are well advertised when they are coming up on our website, and in local newspapers.
 
Where can I get advice about caring for old books / papers / photographs?
The Genealogical Society meet 10 am -12pm on Wednesdays at Paraparaumu Library, or contact the Local History Librarian.
 
Can I pay my rates at the library?
You can in Waikanae, and Ōtaki at our service centres Monday to Friday. At Paraparaumu you can pay at the council offices in Rimu Road.
 
Are there listening posts at the library?
In Paraparaumu there are 4 posts. There are none at the other libraries.
 
Can I access a wheelchair at the library?
Yes you can at Paraparaumu, and Ōtaki. But there is not one in Waikanae
 

Computers/Internet/Email

 
Can I search the internet and send e-mails from the library?
Yes you can, the service is free for library members. For others it costs $1.50 for 15 minutes. Certain time restrictions apply and bookings are recommended.
 
Can I print from the internet in the library?
Yes, for black and white it is 20c for A4 and 30c for A3. For colour it is $2.00 for A4 and 3.00 for A3
 
Can I use my memory stick or card on a computer in the library?
Yes you can.
 
Are there facilities for word processing / excel at the library?
Yes these facilities are available on our Internet computers. The service is free for library members. For others it costs $1.50 for 15 minutes. Certain time restrictions apply and bookings are recommended.
 
 
Can I use my laptop at the library?
Yes you can, we have power points located throughout the library.
 
Can I connect to a wireless hotspot at the library?
Wireless hotspots are not available in the library.
 
Can I create a music CD on the computers at the library?
Currently you are not able to do this.
 
Can I use CD-Rom on a library computer?
Our computers are for Internet use only.
 
 

Photocopying/Faxes

 
How much is it to send a fax from the library?
National faxes are $1.00 for the first page, and an additional .50c for additional pages.
International Faxes are $1.50 for the first pages, and .70c for additional pages.
 
Can I receive faxes at the Library?
Yes you can. Please see staff at the Information Desk.
 
What photocopying facilities are available at the library?
Black and white copies upto A3 in size. It costs .20c per A4 and 30c per A3.
 
Is colour printing available from the library?
Yes - colour copying costs $2.00 for A4 and $3.00 for A3.
 
Is there a scanner for public use at the library?
Yes, we can scan documents for you which are then emailed to you. The cost is $1.00 for the first page and an additional .50c for additional pages.

 

Other questions

 
Can I donate books or other materials to the library?
Donations of good quality material are welcome but need to fulfil our collection development criteria.
 
I am a performer, are there any opportunities to perform in your library?
Please come into the library and discuss this in person with library management.
 
Where can I find out about jobs in the libraries?
All jobs are advertised in the local papers, and on the Kāpiti Coast District Council website.
 
 
How do I make my feelings known to the library?
Please complete a Feedback Form available at each library
or contact us via email.
 
I’ve found a wallet, and the only ID is the library card. Who does it belong to?
Under the Privacy Act we cannot give this information out. However, if you supply us with your name and contact details, we can contact the card owner and let them know.
 
 
I’ve left some personal belongings in the library. What can I do?
Please phone us and we will look in our lost property for you.
