Some good sites

Guys Read, a web-based literacy program for boys by Jon Scieszka.

Jon Scieszka is a guy.  He grew up with five other guys — his brothers. This certainly influenced his worldview, and helped inspire him to start Guys Read. Jon is also a children's author. We hold many of his books in our libraries.

Radio New Zealand's Storytime Treasure Chest

Stories to listen to from Radio New Zealand's children's programmes.

Great websites for parents of Under 5s

Kāpiti Kids Connect is here to connect you and your children with the Kāpiti Coast community! So take five, grab a coffee, hot chocolate or herbal tea and have a browse. We're sure you'll find something that connects you and your kids with the Kāpiti Coast.

Popular children's series

Do you always forget the  title of the book that comes after Harry Potter and the chamber of secrets or  whether  The miserable mill  is the 4th or 5th book in The series of unfortunate events?

Then this list is for you. It outlines the titles of a series in the order you should read them.

Your Reviews

We would like reviews of books you have read - written by kids - for kids. So tell us about a book you have been reading that you think others might enjoy.

The BFG (Big Friendly Giant) by Roald Dahl

The BFG is a story about a little girl called Sophie, and a giant (BFG) that she met one night at the witching hour.

Once the BFG caught Sophie she went to a giant cave and a giant country and met lots of giants, and the biggest one was called The Bloodbottler.

The BFG’s job was to give children good dreams.  He was the only one.  The others gobbled up the ‘human beans’.  When Sophie found out about this, they had to save the ‘chidlers’.   Find out who they met when you read it and who really wrote the story!...Have you read it yet??

Wilma's wicked spell by Kaye Umansky

Wilma,  the Queen of the Night’s daughter, receives a letter from great aunt Angria, (also known as the Thirteenth Faerie ) inviting her to Ancestral Halls, where great aunt Angria lives, to help on a highly secret wicked spell.

Great Aunt Angria is a scary old woman, who lives in an abandoned old castle with her live werewolf (who acts as if he is a dog), ghosts who play in an orchestra, real live people who she has put under an enchanted  spell, and  rats.

The wicked spell includes: a trip to fairyland, an old curse, a handsome prince, a group  of old retired fairies, a soppy princess, a talking wolf, an angry chef shouting rude worlds  and a  lot of  washing up!

In the end, Aunt Angria finally gives in that the story should end with a ‘happy ever after’ and that the gout cream that Wilma’s mother sent to her did work!

The funniest thing in the book was: Uncle Bacchus’ singing:

"Show me the way to go home,,.

I’m   hungry and I want a big kebab…
"

 Instead of the Scottish song:

"
Show me the way to go home,

I’m tired and I want to go to bed …"

by Rose Ansell

The giant postman by Sally Grindley

I like this book because it has big writing so I can read it well.

Everybody was frightened of the giant postman.  But a kid called Billy was not. The kid wrote a letter to the giant postman.  The kid knocked on the postman’s door in the woods.  The postman opened up the letter and read it. Billy went back to his house. The postman wrote a letter to Billy saying that he did not mean to frighten the people. It was his birthday that day.  They made a party for the postman and they decorated the street.  They also made cards and a cake and had a band for the postman.
