My friend, Tungia Kaihau-Symmons and the old people inspired me to widen my horizons by enrolling in the Community Services Certificate at Kapiti Whitireia. Going into study as a mature student was daunting; so much so my friend and mentor Tungia walked beside me by attending class with me until the end of the first term when I decided to get me a Social Work degree - thanks Tu and old people. "I chose Whitireia because of the staff I met on induction day. They were great ambassadors for what a person could become. Those wahine looked like us, spoke like us, but you knew that they had a lot to teach us. And I could tell by their korero that they were being 'straight up' about the programme, the challenges, and changes students need to make as part of ones commitment. During my 3rd year I became vey ill. I know the extreme support I received from staff during that time extended beyond their responsibilities - kia ora team. I would definitely recommend it to othersthe staff, the role models, the mentors...And now, everything I've learnt I aim to apply to my own community of Otaki. "The Community Services Certificate was the making of my career path. While the Community Services Certificate programme is no longer offered, however, Whitireia now offers a short pre-entry programme, a Foundation programme, and a Social Work post-graduate programme on the Kapiti campus. The Pre-Entry is designed for those returning to study after a long break and the Foundation Education programme prepares students with the minimum academic entry requirements for the degree.
